Distinguished and Famous people from Brighton
The Brighton municipality's public service includes long careers in local government and community medicine. These connections cover the wider council area, including Bridgewater, rather than only the suburb of Brighton.
🏛️ Tony Foster
Tony Foster served Brighton Council for thirty-four years, including twenty-eight as mayor, before retiring in June 2021. His long tenure spanned substantial growth and change across the municipality. In its tribute after his death in 2024, the council highlighted expanded services, economic development and his ability to see projects through. Education was a particular interest: in announcing his retirement, he emphasised the importance he placed on improving opportunities for local young people. His connection is a sustained record of municipal representation, extending across the communities served by Brighton Council.
🩺 Dr Chris Hughes
Chris Hughes' association with Greenpoint Medical Centre began with a University of Tasmania student placement in 1977 and developed into more than forty years of medical work. Brighton Council recognised his service with a civic reception on his retirement. He was named Tasmania's General Practitioner of the Year in 2022 and received the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners' Rose-Hunt Award in 2023. Alongside patient care, his professional contribution included examining and college committee work. His story gives the municipality a documented connection to nationally recognised general practice through decades of local care.
